    Generally in the fitness world, we speak of metabolism in terms of how many calories our bodies burn off. People may throw around “slow metabolism” as an excuse for why they’re not achieving their goals, and that it’s out of their control.

    Assuming you don’t have any metabolism related diseases, let me tell you that you do have control. You can speed up your metabolism and get the calorie furnace in your body operating at full capacity. Here’s how you can do it:

    1.) Lift Weights and Build Muscle

    Most people start off their weight loss journeys by doing lots of cardio. I suggest you start off with a solid lifting routine that prioritizes heavy lifting and muscle growth. A body with more muscle will burn more calories at rest. You become a calorie burning machine, whether you’re in the gym or not!

    2.) Eat More Protein

    Protein is far more thermogenic (gives off heat during digestion, indicating calorie burn) than carbs and fats. This means our body works harder to digest protein. Eat at least 0.7g to 1g per lb of bodyweight.

    3.) Drink More Water

    Our bodies are made up of primarily water. Every function of our body is facilitated through water. Replace your sodas and sugary drinks with good old water, and the machine that is your body will operate much smoother. Drink at least half your bodyweight in ounces.

    4.) Get More Sleep

    Our bodies run more optimally when we are well rested – blood sugar levels are regulated, cravings reduced, better digestion, better waste elimination, etc. Get at least 7-9 hours of sleep on a nightly basis.
